6AD001: portfolio research: concept artists

As I started to looked into what I want to do as a freelance artist or going into a role that requires good art skills aswell as for animator is by looking into existing concept artists that I can inspire from from any profession which could be freelance, lead artist and set developers for films and video games.

One of the sites I found useful start up information on concept artists was from gizmodo describing how diverse these artists can approach their unique and individual styles and outlook that people believe these individuals can create their own movies if they wanted to.
Here is a link to the page:
http://io9.gizmodo.com/10-concept-artists-who-should-be-working-on-their-own-m-1530717946

The most vibrant artists I think I would inspire from include:
  • Sergi Brosa, a character designer and illustrator who portrays art that envision distopian, futuristic setting that also showcases a sense of the uncanny valley from the dynamics and characters involved in the scenarios. They also tell the admirer that there are dark tales behind the story of these pieces as from a first glance they would seem chaotic, barren, apocalyptic, unusual and violent.

  •  Claire hummel who is a freeelance artist that creates fan art that is usually very popular on twitter but what i find most interesting about her work is that the approach to use bright colours even if they seem dark to change the dynamic of the setting even if she was changing the colour on the same inspired topic. Aswell as fan art her approach is recognizable in the 2013 video game Bioshock Infinite which was praised not only for the developed characters, plot and gameplay but also for it's visual style and art direction that made a great impact to driving the story was told and how the characters interact with the environmental set pieces especially with the help of Claire's character designs to blend well with the setting and personalities.
Below are some links to her site and other sites that relate to her work: http://claire-hummel-interview.blogspot.co.uk/

  • Ryan Church is an concept designer best known for creating aline themed art, scenarios and set pieces for blockbuster films such as Avatar, War of the worlds, Star Wars episode two (Attack of the clones) and three (Revenge of the sith) even the most recent episode seven (the force awakens)

From these links, I will research and present the finding on another post describing from what these artists have accomplished to get to where they am and why they love this type of method, skill and theme to create art pieces for films or showcasing what they can do over to a broad audience. These important aspects will generate what I want to envision for a career path and showcase what I want out of it when developing my skills further within my portfolio building.

6AD001: week 7: (14th-21st march) silent signal

As part of building a portfolio aswell as seeing other opportunities when they arise, me and most of my animation year when the Silent Signals talk that involved the work between six groups of two people of an animator and a scientist in the edgbaston Campus at the University of Birmingham. As we only saw three groups including one with one of our lecturers Samantha Moore that was apart of the different projects it was interesting how the most unusual partnership can end up creating something that makes the subject more informative visually and descriptive and have a better notion of how these two different professions can create projects that can be easily recognized they've been done by the scientist and animator in terms of what the subject is aswell as how to present that subject.
What was important to me overall of the talk is that as an animator it shows that opportunities can come from projects that wouldn't regularly be done.
Below shows some links to the event on websites relating to silent signal:

below shows some photos I have attempted to take of the event and where it was:

6DM022, 6DM012: week 19 (14th-21st march 2016)

schedule
As this week was busy with silent signal trip in Birmingham, the zoo trip in Dudley that gained me more experience of life drawing animals aswell as documenting them for future study and showing the complete animatic to be ready for fully animating the characters, my step forward was to continue animating my project as much as I could over the Easter holiday aswell as looking into more job sites for potential applications within my portfolio and researching inspirations. The photos below show what I am hoping to do as I keep on schedule to meet the standards I want. They are basic descriptions but they will be written more clearly in a future post when I have updated the digital schedule. I also put a deadline on the week 8 post to get half of the lineart animation done before showcasing to lecturers and peers.

Updated animatic
Not much has changed with the animatic I wanted to show this version with improved based on more sessions in the sound booth and the software they have.
But I also found the time to create better backgrounds for some of the scenes of the animation to give a relative idea of where I want the presentation to go and what the final outlook would like once edited and cleaned up.

Below shows the setup which took each nearly an hour to set up and take down. But we managed to get the right photos for the project based on his of placeholder photos. To check out his work the link is http://andytails.blogspot.co.uk/

Zoo trip
From the same week as the silent signal event, the animation club run by second years Bethany Borg and Summer Davies Newton organized a trip to Dudley zoo for the purpose of advancing our skills in life drawing especially basing on animals for all years. This trip for me aswell as others in the third year was beneficial as these inspirations and capture of animal movement and poses helps when animating our final films since they involve some form of animal that drives the plot forward. Below shows the best of photos I personally taken whilst on the trip aswell as rough sketches of the animals themselves. The trip also involved going to Dudley castle in the same area which was useful to see the old architecture of this 11th century old structure.

These are quick sketches whilst looking and walking around the zoo but these will be improved aswell as sketching more from photos taken by other students that I went with on the trip aswell as my own photos. These will be useful to show on a future post aswell as being beneficial for my portfolio project.
